What We are Up To
Summer hasn’t slowed down, here are a few highlights
Dollhouse Update: The city has given “unofficial” approval for us to add the extra unit to the dollhouse without going through the variance and approvals at the council level which could take months. They are requiring we turn one of the units into an accessible unit as this is a requirement in New Brunswick for all new builds over 4 units. Even though this is not a new build and we are only adding one unit, it will still be a requirement. There are only 2 of the 7 total units we will have that this will make sense with due to the grading so we are exploring which unit will be the most feasible. We also have to add in extra parking and pave them all.
We are now figuring out the financing to make sure we can pay for this project as it will be costly. Once that is figured out, then we can proceed.
Who Not How Put into Practice: I mentioned this book in a previous newsletter and Doug and I have been putting it into practice.
On the business side we have hired:
A virtual assistant which is why you are receiving this newsletter that had been on the “to do list” for a long time. She is also helping with research, some tech and helping me clean up my inbox as it is scary.
A marketing intern from one of the local universities and she has been instrumental in getting our social media up and running and consistent. Previously, I was lucky to post once every few months, while now we have a consistent schedule happening. She is also making me step out of my comfort zone and get in front of the camera.
On the home front we have hired:
A cleaner
A gardener who also cuts the lawn
Bought a Narwal that vacuums and mops the main floor of our house automatically.
All of these have helped free up our time both to work on the parts of the business that only we can do and also to do the things we love to do.
Interviewing Power Team Members in the US
We have started to interview in the US for service providers for our expansion into the US. I have spoken with a couple of accountants, realtors and a lawyer as we start to get ready to invest in the US market.
Sunset Up for Sale:
After months of back and forth, my partners and I on Sunset, have decided to put the project up for sale. It is a great project with the development of the 55 additional units to come. We are happy with where we have taken the project to and are excited to move on to our next project together. If you know anyone looking to break into the Fredericton Market or get into development, send them along to our realtors here.
What I am listening to on Audible
The Wise Investor
by Rich Fettke
This is a quick and easy listen told in a story format. It follows Ryan as he he starts the path to financial freedom by investing and changing his limiting beliefs. It goes through his journey of not having enough time or money to spend with his family and do the things they want, to working with a mentor who helps him forge a different path. It is not easy, and they make some sacrifices, however the rewards in the end are worth it.

Useful Tip:
Put down the Broom
(or computer, or phone etc)
This conversation has randomly come up 3 times in the last few weeks so I thought I would share my tip when raising kids, which also applies to grandkids, nieces and nephews, or friends.
One young dad was moaning a little about how many times he sweeps up crumbs in a day. This is where the title comes from as I told him to “put down the broom”. Our children are not going to remember how spotless the floor is they will remember the time you spent together and would much rather have your attention than a spotless floor. (Of course my other advice was to get a dog lol, they clean up all the crumbs!)
I honestly don’t remember how clean or not our kitchen floor was when I was growing up. I do remember my mom reading to us and my dad coaching my softball team. I do remember our family vacations and my parents being at every event in my life. I do remember their presence when I was happy and when I was sad. I do remember watching tv together as a family and family dinners. Doug and I have brought that into our family together and while we were not always perfect, our girls always knew that they were so important to us and loved and have so many happy memories of the time we spent together. I can also say they turned out fantastic even though sometimes they had to find matching socks to wear in the basket of clean laundry.
It is okay to give yourself permission and the grace to not have everything perfect. There just aren’t enough hours in a day for that. Perfectionism is something I struggle with, however, as I have gotten “wiser” (aka older), I have learned that it isn’t realistic or productive in most situations.
I challenge you to spend a little extra time with your kids, grandkids or friends instead of cleaning something or spending more time on the computer. The time we have with each other on this earth is so limited so spend it wisely. The ROI (return on investment) will be tenfold.
We’d love to hear from you!
